(i wrote this today in my Abnormal Psych class)
Everyone’s engaged or maybe they’re
all just in here…
Appearances aren’t everything
Tell that to most people
“We wear the mask
that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks
and shades our eyes”
I’m anyone, but I do wonder
if anyone wearing a ring
is blessedly assured that
their mate is God’s intended
or do they intend them to be?
i wanted an M.R.S degree before
now I’ll probably get that MS first.
A t-shirt reads, “single means
being able to choose between the lead
singer and the starting quarterback”
this is much realer than that
cuts through the surface of
the masks we wear on our hearts.
Jesus calls us by name to Himself
if we’re single we might hear it
if our hearts are tied to another
we may hear Him—or his knocking
might be muffled by sweet kisses
late night conversations and
constant companionship
notes:
1. the poem quoted in the first few lines is "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Lawrence Dunbar
2. MRS degree (in short) means married during school or upon completion of school
